Jean-Pierre Siutat, president of the FFBB, notably confirmed, on Tuesday, Vincent Collet as coach of the Blues.

Present at a press conference on Tuesday October 10, the president of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB), Jean-Pierre Siutat, took stock of the two French teams following the summer competitions. He also discussed the various issues that have stirred up the news for these two teams. Here’s what you need to remember.

Vincent Collet and Jean-Aimé Toupane confirmed in their positions

Despite an elimination in the first round of the World Cup, following a defeat once morest Latvia (86-88), the Federation decided to trust its coach, whose contract runs until the end of the 2024 Olympic Games. Jean-Pierre Siutat emphasized his “job done (…), his track record and his ability to bounce back” as following the failures during the 2016 Olympics and Euro 2017. “He then led us to a streak of three consecutive medals (bronze at the 2019 World Cup, silver at the 2021 Olympics and Euro 2022) (…) There is no doubt that he will be the man for the job.” continued Siutat, following being eliminated in the first round at the World Cup when the title was the objective.

He also recalled that Jean-Aimé Toupane, already confirmed for the first time following Euro 2023, would remain at the head of the Bleues. While they were aiming for gold, the players left the competition with the bronze medal.

Marine Johannès announces her presence at the 2024 Olympics gathering

Not selected for Euro 2023 for having missed the first days of training in order to sign her contract with the New York WNBA franchise, Marine Johannès announced her presence at the “first day of gathering” for the Olympic Games, announced the general manager of the Bleues, Céline Dumerc.

She will however not be part of the expanded group of 19 players called up for their Euro 2025 qualifying matches in November, just like Gabby Williams, but both players “remain selectable”. Meanwhile, the former Asvel player thrills the United States during the first game of the WNBA Finals, starting with superstar LeBron James.

The president of the federation “disappointed” with the Joël Embiid file

Concerning the case of Joël Embiid, who opted for the American selection last week with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympics following having considered playing for France, of which he acquired nationality, the president of the FFBB, Jean-Pierre Siutat, stated: “We have never been plaintiffs. And I am disappointed that we spent so much time and energy on a file that should never have been initiated and was never initiated at our request.”

Status quo for players playing in Russia

The French federation also questioned the thorny case of players who left for Russia despite the geopolitical context of the war in Ukraine. Thomas Heurtel, who plays in Russia despite the rules laid down by the federation, is therefore not “still not selectable” in blue. “To date, there has been no progress in the matter,” indicated Jean-Pierre Siutat.

The latter, however, did not close the door to “evolution” of the situation, for which the Federation will “work politically” with the Ministry of Sports. “We will look at what can be done and acceptable, particularly with regard to Ukraine” he added.
