Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health and Prevention, went on Monday October 9, 2023 to the Gustave Roussy Institute in Villejuif, in Val-de-Marne, on the occasion of Operation Pink October, month awareness of breast cancer screening. He discussed prevention projects carried out using artificial intelligence (AI).
Whereas in France, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimeconstituting the 1time cause of death from cancer among women in the country, the challenge of increasing breast cancer screening is essential to women’s health. During this trip, the Minister was able to discuss with Institute staff regarding new technologies, including AI, mobilized in the face of this public health challenge, which combine innovation and prevention.
In the field of oncology, AI contributes to research projects with concrete and rapid impact. The minister was keen to underline the importance of this research with a view to democratizing access to screening. This is the case of the start-up Owkin, which presented to the minister its tools contributing to the personalization and anticipation of breast cancer treatment. The tool developed assesses, for example, the risk of relapse during the initial diagnosis of breast cancer, and thus makes it possible to avoid overly invasive surgeries or overly heavy chemotherapy. Owkin was supported in this approach to the tune of €6M by the Government’s France 2030 investment plan.
Prevention, innovation and artificial intelligence are today closely linked, and must contribute to the development of tools to prevent the development of diseases and improve their treatment. All projects supported by the State, such as at the Gustave Roussy Institute, make it possible to create strong synergy with hospitals, researchers and businesses. This dynamic will radically change the management of breast cancer, the first step of which remains that of diagnosis. As such, equal access for all to rapid care is decisive and must be our compass in all circumstances. The regional cancer screening coordination centers and the outreach policies carried out by the ARS are already making a strong contribution to this. Promote screening and support innovative projects
The Government’s action in the fight once morest breast cancer involves an effective primary prevention and screening policy, particularly through the new roadmap for organized cancer screenings “Priority screenings” announced in December 2022 by the Prime Minister, with a renovated organization of screenings and the first measures to develop the missions of the regional cancer screening coordination centers (CRCDC).
The Government will also continue its support for the development of innovative projects in the field of cancer through:
- Funding mobilized by the Ministry of Health and Prevention makes it possible to continue the digitization of pathological anatomy and cytology slides*, an essential step in the development of AI: €30 million deployed in 2022 and 2023 to finance health establishments in their slide digitization projects, and €50 million in additional financing will be mobilized in 2024 and 2025 to finalize the digitization laboratories, for a total of €80 million.
- The Ministry of Health and Prevention has also mandated a mission on the policy of digitization of pathological anatomy and cytology [1], to identify and analyze anomalies linked to a disease led by Dr. Solène-Florence Kammerer-Jacquet and Mr. Laurent Tréluyer. This mission met with numerous professionals in the sector and must deliver its conclusions by the end of the year, enabling us to enrich our joint actions.
