On Tuesday morning, the roar of explosions echoed throughout the Gaza area, as the Israel Defense Forces carried out intense bombardments once morest the enclave.

The attacks continued throughout the night and into the morning, and multiple fighter jets were heard flying over the area.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that its planes had attacked more than 200 targets in Rimal and Khan Younis, in Gaza, alleging that these areas “are used as terrorist centers” by Hamas and that “a large number of terrorist attacks once morest Israel are directed from there.

The IDF said it was committed to “ensuring that Hamas does not have any military capabilities at the end of the war.”

Although the IDF claimed it was focusing on strikes once morest Hamas targets, the nature of Gaza – a narrow strip of land that is densely populated and completely isolated from the outside world – means that civilians, including children, are often trapped in the attacks.

IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said Tuesday that the distinction between military and civilian targets was not so simple. “In the buildings where people live there may be a weapons warehouse… there may be a Hamas leader living there,” he said.
Death toll rises: At least 900 people have been killed in Israel and more than 680 Palestinians have lost their lives since the conflict broke out on Saturday, when Hamas launched a devastating surprise attack on Israel.

On Tuesday, the Hamas-controlled Government Media Office added that two local journalists were killed and another wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in western Gaza.

IDF attacks are even more complicated given that Hamas is holding several hostages.

Israeli authorities believe there are women and children among the 150 hostages in Gaza, the country’s ambassador to the UN has said. Hamas has said it is holding more than 100 captives, including Israeli army officers.
