The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has abandoned plans to allow Russian under-17 teams to participate in international tournaments. This is reported Associated Press and journalist for the British television channel Sky News Rob Harris.
According to Harris, UEFA said in a statement that the organization “was unable to find a technical solution that would allow Russian teams to play.”
26 September UEFA Executive Committee decidedthat Russian youth teams will be allowed to participate in international competitions during the current season. He turned to the organization’s leadership with a request to “offer a technical solution” that would allow the Russian men’s and women’s teams under 17 to participate. It was assumed that the teams would play matches without the country’s flag, anthem, national playing uniform and not on Russian territory.
UEFA said that “children should not be punished for actions for which adults alone are responsible” and added that the organization “firmly believes that football should never stop sending messages of peace and hope.” After the UEFA decision, several countries announced that they would refuse to play with Russian youth teams if they were admitted to international tournaments. Among them are Ukraine, England, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania.
Following UEFA, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has allowed Russian national teams under 17 years of age to participate in the World Cup if they can qualify for the qualifying tournaments.
UEFA and FIFA suspended Russian clubs and national teams from international tournaments following the start of a full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine.
