Vision Pro displays can deliver refresh rates of up to 100Hz

Shortly following its long-awaited announcement, we learned that the 4K Micro-OLED screens of the Apple Vision Pro will be able to achieve a refresh rate of up to 96Hz, although they will operate at 90Hz most of the time. This exception, according to Maçã, comes into play when the user is consuming content recorded at 24 frames per second, for example.

It turns out that, apparently, the headset may be capable of delivering even higher refresh rates in some scenarios. According to code found in the fourth beta of visionOS 1.0 by the X user (ex-Twitter) M1 [@M1Astra]the virtual/augmented reality device might actually achieve rates of up to 100Hz.

Apple Vision Pro refresh rate revealed according to visionOS beta 4. There appear to be 100Hz, 96Hz, and 90Hz refresh rate modes. “Adjusted to 100Hz to compensate for 50Hz flicker detected in artificial lighting.” “Travel mode requires 90Hz at all times.”

According to the post, however, Vision Pro will only display content at this refresh rate if the device detects that the lights in an environment (such as lamps and lamps) are blinking in the image seen by the user, which can cause some discomfort.

This happens because some artificial lights operate at a frequency of 50Hz, which can cause the phenomenon described previously, also called “flickering” — very common especially in content recorded at 60Hz. In Europe, for example, several electrical systems operate at 50Hz, which makes this feature even more important there.

The information that the Vision Pro would be capable of delivering images at up to 100Hz, it is worth noting, is not exactly new. Although Apple limited itself to saying that it would only reach 96Hz, a list of device specifications released in August already realized this capacity.

Either way, we now know that Apple’s mixed reality headset will have at least three display modes (90Hz, 96Hz and 100Hz), although two of them will only work in specific situations. The device even automatically limits the refresh rate to 90Hz when the user activates “Travel Mode” (“Travel Mode”), such as during a flight.
