SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A car crashed into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco on Monday, reaching the lobby, creating a chaotic scene that ended with a shootout between police and the driver, who later died at the hospital. authorities said.
The police went to the building following 3:00 p.m. following receiving a report that a vehicle had crashed into the building and urged the population to avoid the area. The agents entered the lobby of the consulate visa office, made contact with the suspect and a shootout occurred with the driver, Sergeant Kathryn Winters explained at a press conference.
Despite “life-saving efforts,” the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Television cameras showed a Honda sedan crashed into the visa office and the building’s front doors cordoned off.
Winters indicated that it was unknown why the car crashed into the building or how many people were inside at the time of the accident, but said they had no reports of other injuries.
Police are working and coordinating with investigators from the State Department and the Chinese consulate.
