The dance teacher was surprisingly replaced by Malika Benjelloun for the new season of Star Academy, expected on November 4 on TF1. A deliberate choice of chain depending on the dancer.

Yannis Marshall wants to tell “his truth”. Asked by The Parisianthe professional dancer and highly appreciated former teacher of the 10th promotion of the Star Academy returned to the reasons for his departure from telecrochet, relaunched in 2022 by TF1 and whose new season is expected for November 4.

While TF1 announced during a press conference at the beginning of October that he was going to be replaced by Malika Benjelloun as the show’s dance teacher, Yanis Marshall assures that it was not a personal decision but a deliberate choice by the first channel.

“The production and the channel noted this at the end of February. (…) I was asked to pretend to have personal projects, under the pretext that the public would not understand that I was being ousted. But, today, “I need to tell my truth. Many have advised me not to do so, but it’s my way of getting better and moving forward,” he confides to Le Parisien.

Although he already enjoyed a certain notoriety abroad as a dancer and choreographer, Yanis Marshall specifies that overexposure and the pressure of the Star Academy had a harmful impact on his mental health.

“I was both a teacher and a choreographer, so I left at 7 a.m. and returned at midnight. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking that I was being filmed (…) From the third week, I found myself having huge anxiety attacks,” he explains.

“I had the biggest anxiety attack of my life”

Crises which led Yanis Marshall to “evacuate” by taking refuge in particular in alcohol during evenings. After several weeks on the show, the dancer finally broke down and arrived at the filming of the third bonus “in a total hangover”.

“Everyone was a little worried. I put on Dior glasses and went on set. And, in the end, I did my best performance. (…) I did the job, even if I suffered inside”, assures Yanis Marshall to Le Parisien.

But everything changes during the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, in 2022, where the dancer is invited to present the prize for French-speaking female artist of the year. “When I got off stage, I downed a bottle of champagne and collapsed in tears. I had the biggest anxiety attack of my life,” he says.

Emotionally fragile following this crisis, the dancer then decides to “empty his bag” to a “person from TF1” in whom he “thought he trusted”. But quickly, this story reached the ears of Star Academy producers, Jean-Louis Blot and Mathieu Vergne.

“You know, you’re not stable.”

In the meantime, Yanis Marshall tries to get back on track: he goes to Brazil, far from any media coverage, and begins psychological follow-up. But in February 2023, a sudden return to reality. “We all had meetings with production. They asked others how they felt regarding last season. But I was told, ‘Have you done detoxification?'”, explains the dancer at Parisien.

“They wanted to prove to TF1 that it was okay. But I didn’t need it and I was able to last the three months. But during a second meeting, they told me: ‘It’s not okay. to do, TF1 has made its decision.’ They told me: ‘You know, you’re not stable,’ and that they mightn’t take the risk of taking me back,” he confides.

“It’s total hypocrisy. (…) If I had experienced the same thing and said nothing, I would still be at the ‘Star Academy’ today. (…) I was in the process of getting back on track, and I hit myself in the face,” adds the former professor.

Despite this surprise and brutal eviction alongside stage expression teacher Laure Balon – replaced by Cécile Chaduteau – Yanis Marshall considers himself “proud” of his career within the Star Academy, which he intends to continue to follow for his new season from November 4. The dancer also says he is feeling better since this announcement and is working on other projects such as the launch of his brand of heels.

“I would just have liked to have had more support from TF1. But it was still a great experience, with great people who I will miss… Well, some, no, but that doesn’t matter,” concludes he with humor.
