It is not news that Steve Jobsco-founder of Apple, had a very particular personality — and further proof of this was an unusual inspiration for a technology product that he used and passed on to the team that developed the macintosh: os Beatles!

The revelation of this element of the computer development process was made by the designer, developer and restaurant manager Clement Mok, who was on the team responsible for creating the machine. He commented on this period of his professional career in an interview withWWD by being one of the winners of the National Design Awards.

Mok stated that his favorite creations are his “first child”, the Macintosh, and his last child, the Sugarfish Sushi restaurant. According to him, the design direction taken by the team of more than 100 people developing the computer, 7 of them dedicated to design, was “whatever Jobs liked”, with hundreds of versions having been created with different designs.

“In a weird way, it was like design indoctrination for me as a practitioner. It wasn’t what it looked like. It was regarding a feeling. The best way to describe this comes from Steve Jobs,” he said. Mok said that Maçã’s co-founder said “What I want is like the Beatles. The early Beatles, not the newer one.”

Faced with this description, the designer and the rest of the team were left without understanding exactly what Jobs meant with this reference. He highlighted, however, that the central idea was to have determination, energy and soul in the development process to achieve the “Beatles concept”.

When I talk to people at Apple and how they think regarding design, that core is still there. And you can’t express it exactly, but their care with detail and creating that experience and the wow factor creates the emotional impact. Right now, Apple is a fashion brand.

He also highlighted how lifestyle and home product brands can also be considered fashion, in addition to how people nowadays prefer to surround themselves with electronics and home decor rather than fabrics. Mok also stated that he took to the restaurant market, in which he currently works, the simplicity and efficiency that he learned in the world of technology.

The designer on the Macintosh team received the National Design Awards in the Digital Design category. Another person to win the distinction was Arem Duplessiscurrently group creative director at Apple, who won an award in the field of communication design.
