The 19th Asian Games concluded on October 8th in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Guangdong sent a strong contingent of 111 athletes as part of the Chinese sports delegation to it, and their performance was nothing short of outstanding. They clinched a total of 30 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals, totaling an impressive 55 medals. Moreover, they shattered one world record, three Asian records, and three Asian Games records.

The Hangzhou Asian Games served as a crucial training ground for Guangdong athletes to prepare for the upcoming Paris Olympics, where they are poised to make their mark in multiple disciplines.

Solid performance in core sports

In the diving events, Quan Hongchan, Chen Yiwen, He Chao, and Yan Siyu each secured gold medals in five different Olympic disciplines.

In synchronized swimming, two gold medals were won, with Wang Qianyi and Wang Liuyi claiming victory in both the duet and team events, earning them direct tickets to the Paris Olympics.

In badminton, two gold medals were also clinched. Chen Qingchen emerged as the women’s doubles champion, while Liang Weikeng secured the men’s team title.

In table tennis, Lin Gaoyuan achieved gold in the men’s team event and a silver in mixed doubles.

Team sports step up to the plate

In rowing, the team secured a total of four gold medals. Among them, Qiu Xiuping and her teammate claimed the women’s lightweight double sculls championship, marking the first gold for China in this year’s Asian Games.

In swimming, the team achieved a remarkable tally of three gold medals and two silver medals. Chen Jun’er and Li Jiaping won the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay and women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, respectively, while Wang Xue’er clinched the gold in the women’s 50m backstroke.

In athletics, China earned two gold medals and three silver medals. Chen Guanfeng, Yan Haibin, and Liang Xiaojing contributed to both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams securing gold medals.

Taking the lead in team sports

Guangdong sent a strong representation of 39 athletes in team sports such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer, accounting for 42% of the total Guangdong contingent.

The women’s basketball team, led by coach Zheng Wei and featuring athletes like Yang Liwei, Huang Sijing, Li Yueru, and Yang Shuyu, successfully defended their championship with a thrilling victory over Japan.

In a significant achievement, Liang Meiyu and Zhong Jiaqi played pivotal roles in the Chinese women’s field hockey team’s gold medal win, marking China’s first Asian Games gold in 13 years and securing a spot at the Paris Olympics.

Impressive performances in new events

In the men’s iQFoil windsurfing, Bi Kun claimed victory with absolute dominance, securing a place at the Paris Olympics.

Guangdong’s youngest athlete, 15-year-old Chen Ye, captured the gold in the men’s skateboarding park, clinching China’s first international comprehensive competition gold medal in skateboarding.

In the sport of Kurash, Liu Yi emerged as the champion in the women’s under 87kg category, securing a precious gold medal in China’s debut at the Asian Games.

Achieving breakthroughs in various games

In the women’s trap team, Zhang Xinqiu and her teammates shattered world, Asian, and Asian Games records with a score of 357.

In the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay swimming, Chen Juner and his teammates set a new Asian record and Asian Games record with a time of 3 minutes and 10.88 seconds.

Equestrianism witnessed a historic breakthrough as Liang Ruiji and his team secured the gold medal in the team event, marking the first time China has won a gold in equestrian events at the Asian Games.

Women’s basketball team head coach Zheng Wei and athletes Yang Liwei, Huang Sijing, Li Yueru and Yang Shuyu led the Chinese women’s basketball team to defeat the Japanese team and win the Asian Games gold medal.

In the women’s multi-directional UFO team shooting event, Zhang Xinqiu and her teammates broke the world record, Asian record and tournament record with a score of 357.

In the men’s 4×100m freestyle relay, Chen Juner and his teammates set a new Asian record and tournament record with a time of 3 minutes, 10 seconds and 88 seconds.

Liang Ruiji and his teammates won the team gold medal in the equestrian event, marking the first time that the Chinese team won a gold medal in the equestrian event at the Asian Games, achieving a historical breakthrough.
