Can I Pay with a Damaged Ticket? Merchant’s Rights and Your Options Explained

2023-10-09 13:24:38

Marc, from Orchies, in the North, explains in the video above that he wanted to pay for his shopping with a slightly damaged ticket. The merchant refused. Is this legal?

Please note first that a merchant is obliged to accept cash payment for all purchases of less than 1000 euros. But the law is clear, coins and notes must be “in good condition”. Conclusion: if your ticket is torn or damaged, the merchant has every right to refuse it.

But Marc tells us that his ticket was slightly torn? Is it the same thing? It’s tricky because it’s at the merchant’s discretion, but the principle is clear, he has the right to refuse a damaged note. A clarification: conversely, you can also refuse to be given a torn or damaged note when they give you change.

So what to do with a damaged ticket? If you have a torn or damaged ticket, it’s true that you can try to tape it, repair it, but in the end, don’t take the risk of having it refused by a merchant. Go exchange it for a new ticket!

You have two options:

– Either you go to a branch of the Banque de France, you will find the list on the banquedefrance.fr website

– Either you take the ticket to a post office counter. Be careful, because not all counters offer this service, also consult the Banque de France website.
