This Sunday, a popular consultation on housing was organized in Ghent. The participation rate reached 12.4%, exceeding the minimum required threshold of 10%.

All residents of Ghent over the age of 16 were asked to vote on two proposals likely to reduce residential property prices:

Municipal public real estate cannot be privatized. Do you agree ? – 79% of voters answered “yes” Should the city create a reserve of public land to achieve 40% social housing? – 77% of voters answered “yes”

This was the first local referendum since 1997, when residents voted once morest the installation of a parking lot. The action group “Te Duur” (“Too Expensive” in French) forced the municipality to organize this election by collecting more than 27,000 signatures.

Ghent has been facing a lack of social housing and a shortage in the housing market in general for years. According to a recent study, 20,000 additional households will look for housing in the city by 2040, which will worsen the shortage to nearly 6,000 homes. The result of this consultation is not binding.
