A regulation adopted on Monday by the EU member states at the Council meeting in Luxembourg is intended to increase the proportion of sustainably produced fuels (SAF) in EU aviation. Specifically, suppliers of kerosene must have a two percent share here by 2025. By 2030, the mandatory SAF share will rise to six percent and then to 70 percent by 2050.
The SAF includes, for example, fuels made from organic waste, used cooking oil, but also synthetically produced fuels (e-fuels). By 2030, the share of these e-fuels should be 1.2 percent, increasing to 35 percent by 2050. Furthermore, rules are set to prevent airlines from adopting a fueling policy in which additional weight leads to more emissions. A label system should also make it easier for consumers to see how environmentally harmful or environmentally friendly a flight is.
The EU regulation is part of the so-called Fit for 55 package, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by at least 55 percent by 2030. After today’s approval by the EU member states, the regulation can now come into force as planned on January 1, 2024, but some articles of the legal text will only come into effect from 2025.
