Long criticized and singled out, 5G is finally starting to seduce the French. According to the latest figures from Arcep, the telecoms regulator, the number of active SIM cards in France is 10.4 million in the second quarter.

Still according to the telecoms policeman, the proportion of users “amounts to 13% of the total number of SIM cards in service”, or 7 points more in one year. Today, 5G is mainly switched on in large urban centers and medium-sized towns. Operators use this technology in particular to prevent networks from saturating. Knowing that data consumption will crescendo. “Traffic per active 4G customer amounts to 15.4 GB per month, or 1.8 GB more in one year and per subscriber”specifies Arcep.

Operator revenues increase

At the same time, the regulator emphasizes that the revenues of operators (Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free) in the retail market continue to increase – as has been the case for three years. In the second quarter, they increased by 1.6% in one year, to 9.1 billion euros. “The combined effect of growth of more than 2% for two years in the mobile services market, and an improvement in that of fixed services since the start of 2023 explains this dynamic”adds the regulator.

Price increases and moderation of promotions, on the basis of fixed Internet, explain this “embellishment”. ” The average bill for users of these services increases by 1.2 euros in one year to reach 34.5 euros excluding tax per month”specifies the regulator.

Despite quality problems, fiber, which allows you to benefit from ultra-fast Internet, is still on the rise. The number of subscriptions to this technology is now flirting with 20 million. “There are 3.5 million more in one year to have taken out this type of package this quarter”, indicates the regulator. Today, fiber subscribers represent 62% of high and very high speed Internet subscriptions.
