Affected by floods for a fourth time since May, the owners of the Le Genévrier campsite in Baie-Saint-Paul are starting to get impatient while government aid is still awaited and there is still no no planned work.

The institution which had become a symbol of the devastating floods of May 1 due to the extent of the damage and the images of trailers swept away by the force of the Mares River was hit once more on Sunday.

The co-owner, Bruno Labbé then estimated his damages and losses at $12 million. And that’s without taking into account the money invested to protect the campsite from the floods that followed and the sums spent to restore the campsite which despite everything operated at less than 50% capacity this summer.

Some promises
“We were promised help and so far we have received absolutely nothing. It’s starting to be irritating,” said Bruno Labbé following the events on Sunday.
Bruno Labbé had, however, received visits from several ministers and deputies since the sad events, including that of the Minister of Tourism, Caroline Proulx in June, who then assured that announcements were “coming”.
Accompanied by the MP for Charlevoix–Côte-de-Beaupré, Kariane Bourassa, the minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale, Jonatan Julien also specified that the government was going to look into a way to help the Labbé family during a visit in August.
Important work
Before other episodes of this kind occur, Bruno Labbé believes that intervention would be necessary along the entire length of the Mares River between the city’s water intake and the Route 138 bridge.

According to him, the river should be reworked on this plot of approximately 800 meters. He explains that the river bed must be re-excavated since it is now non-existent due to multiple floods.
“It’s a major intervention that will cost several million. We can assume many costs, but we cannot pay to restore the river to bring it back to an acceptable and safe state,” explains the co-owner of the institution.

“It’s going to start pressing. We will not be able to wait for studies for a year or two because otherwise we will relive this every month,” he added.
