A law tabled by several senators might allow the reuse of many vehicles from the conversion bonus system.
On September 11, as part of the climate law, Joël Labbé and Guillaume Gontard, environmentalist senators from Morbihan and Isère, took the initiative of tabling a bill “aimed at promoting the reuse of vehicles, service of sustainable and inclusive mobility in the territories”.
The main objective is to be able to recover cars intended to be destroyed as part of the conversion bonus and to rent them at unbeatable prices to the most modest households. Many of them are still in good condition.
This approach would allow very low-income households to access an attractive offer within a social rental circuit through a network of solidarity garages. “We want to extend the lifespan of these cars rather than systematically scrapping them,” insists Guillaume Gontard to our colleagues at Capital.
A car for 7 euros per day?
In a solidarity garage located in Romans-sur-Isère, in the Drôme department, the system is already in place. For a person whose family quotient is less than 750 euros, wishing to take part in a return to work process, renting a car for 7 euros per day is now possible. The contract is renewable every 15 days, for 8 euros per day therefollowing. Unbeatable prices.
“A lot of people are affected. We see it in many peri-urban areas, there are sometimes people who are under house arrest because they do not have the means to own a car or maintain it over the long term. […] It is therefore giving them temporary access to the private car which is often the only way to get around,” recalls Guillaume Gontard, environmentalist senator from Isère.
The bill is currently on the Senate website and should be debated soon.
