The Ministry of Public Administration and Security and Samsung Electronics announced on the 8th that they signed a business agreement on the 6th at Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek Campus to promote the use of mobile ID cards provided by the Korean government.
Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min and Samsung Electronics Management Support Office President Park Hak-gyu attended the signing ceremony.
Through this business agreement, Samsung Electronics promised to cooperate in developing technology to install the mobile identification cards officially provided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the ‘Mobile Driver’s License’ and ‘Mobile National Veterans Registration Card’, on Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy smartphones.
The mobile ID card being promoted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety is a core task of the ‘Digital Platform Government Realization Plan’ and is not only expanding the types of ID cards, but also creating new value in the people’s daily lives together with the private sector.
In the future, citizens who wish to use the mobile ID provided by the government can conveniently obtain and use a ‘mobile driver’s license’ and ‘mobile national veterans registration card’ easily, quickly and safely through Samsung Electronics’ mobile wallet service ‘Samsung Pay’.
Samsung Electronics plans to provide mobile ID services through Samsung Pay starting early next year. Government mobile ID cards issued through Samsung Pay have the same legal effect as physical ID cards.
The Ministry of Public Administration and Security and Samsung Electronics plan to continue exploring various ways to cooperate to expand and develop mobile ID services.
Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min said, “Mobile ID is a foundational project of the digital platform government, and we will use this agreement ceremony as an opportunity to promote opening to the private sector and strive to help the people experience a more convenient daily life.”
Park Han-gyu, head of Samsung Electronics’ Management Support Department, said, “Through collaboration with the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, we have been able to apply Samsung Electronics’ global level security technology to the government’s mobile ID card,” and added, “ID verification and payment through one Samsung Pay app.
“We will further solidify our leadership in the digital wallet market to provide a fast and convenient digital life.”
