As time goes by, the Dacia Spring sees some competitors arriving on the second-hand market. Including the Renault Twingo, much more pleasant to drive.

Although its price has increased significantly since its launch, the Dacia Spring remains undoubtedly the cheapest electric car on the market. Further helped by the CO2 bonus of €5,000, it is in fact available from €15,800 in 45 hp version and Essential finish. Until now, we might only oppose a second-hand Zoé, much more recommendable. But the more time passes, the more electric second hands see their prices approach the price of a new Spring. Still in the Renault group, this is now the case of the small Twingo, converted to electrons two years ago in addition to the small 65 hp thermal SCe at the entry level. Since it now represents the majority of Twingo sales, the “zero emission” variant is increasingly easy to find on the second-hand market.. Concretely, its prices start around €12,000 while the mileage displayed rarely exceeds 50,000. This is therefore quite low for an electric car whose mechanical use remains significantly less pronounced than a thermal car.

A Twingo safer than a Spring

Aged two to three years, the majority of models remain below €15,000 and their mileage is often between 10,000 and 30,000. Good deals in perspective and the certainty of benefiting on a daily basis from road services worthy of the name. Because between a modest power of 45 hp which does not reassure on the ring roads around large cities, frankly average lighting at night, suspension comfort far from soft and tires bordering on dangerous, the Spring spares you nothing. Our measurements are formal, it requires 43 m to stop from 100 km/h compared to 38 m for the Twingo. Five meters apart is huge for two cars in the same category. And don’t think the 65 hp solves a lot of problems. Although it is certainly more efficient than the 45 hp, this additional power has not been fitted to the chassis. In the end, there are almost too many… Opposite, the Twingo makes full use of its 81 hp to cope with all the daily trips. You will simply have to avoid the highway where the autonomy quickly collapses.

So certainly, the Twingo offers a smaller range than the Spring. But since in both cases these are city or inner-city cars, the 130 to 160 km checked by us are more than enough. And then the Twingo’s 22 kWh battery is also faster to recharge. Last advantage, the electric version of the French has logically escaped the reliability problems of its thermal sisters. You may have to deal with some reluctance in the multimedia system or some electronic bugs, but the electric Twingo otherwise displays reassuring reliability, driving and comfort that are much more convincing. You will therefore not be disappointed in preferring it to a Spring.
