While Salzburg, for example, is paying for victims of the state deaf and dumb institution, Minister Polaschek has so far remained inactive
Vienna (OTS) – In so-called “deaf-mute institutions” throughout Austria, deaf children were beaten, beaten and mistreated. Communicating in sign language was also prevented by force. Anyone who has been a victim of violence in such a boarding school can – like other home victims – receive a monthly home victim’s pension from the Ombudsman’s Office. Regardless of this, most federal states pay victims of “their” institutions a flat-rate compensation, which can amount to up to 30,000 euros. But anyone who has been in a federal institution will not receive any compensation, criticized Ombudsman Bernhard Achitz in the ORF program “Citizens’ Lawyer” on October 7th. He calls on Education Minister Martin Polaschek for the Republic to pay compensation once more.++++
Deaf children in particular from Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland were housed in the “Deaf and Dumb Institutions” in Vienna-Speising and Kaltenleutbaren (Lower Austria) – but these were federal institutions. Anyone who was a victim of violence there would have received compensation if they had submitted an application by December 31, 2019. Ombudsman Achitz: “It is urgently necessary for the federal government to pay out compensation once more, because many of those affected only found out regarding the possibility following 2019. Or they knew regarding it, but were only able to face their torment once more later and submit an application for fear of retraumatization.”
Home victim pension can also be applied for independently of the flat rate compensation
Regardless of the compensation paid by the home provider or its legal successor, those affected also have the option of applying for a home victim’s pension. This gesture of recognition by the Republic of Austria in the amount of 367.50 euros per month is organized by the Ombudsman. Ombudsman Bernhard Achitz: “Call the Ombudsman’s Office on 0800 223 223, we will explain to you what you need to do to apply for the pension and also advise you on compensation from the home provider.”
