“Smell it,” says Gabi Winkler. She has just carefully tackled a young fir tree and used a thin branch to puncture a small bubble under its smooth, light-colored bark. Incredible. It smells like tangerine. “This is typical of fir resin,” explains the 42-year-old. “As the fir trees get older, the bumps usually disappear once more – like pimples on people,” she says and grins.
