In the novel by the Norwegian writer John Foss Or “Yon Fosse,” the recent Nobel Prize winner. The events begin from scratch, which is a usual narrative point through which a prelude is made to what will happen in the following events. The more ordinary the introductory event is, the more exciting the following events are. This is the law that John Fosse, or “Yon Fosse,” follows. “Foussa”, as the events begin with a bored man who gets out to drive his car without knowing where he is going. He alternates between turning right and left, and in the end he finds himself stuck at the end of the forest road. It soon gets dark and snow begins to fall but instead of looking for help, he foolishly ventures into the dark forest.
The man gets lost, and while cold and tired, he encounters a glowing being in the middle of the mystery in what looks like a “bright” dream.
Jon Vosse describes the introductory event: “I got out to drive and it felt good to move. I didn’t know where I was going, I was just driving. I was bored. Normally I was never bored, but now I fell prey to it. I mightn’t Thinking of anything I wanted to do. So I did something. I got in my car and drove, and when I got to one place, I might turn right or left, I turned right, and at the next place I might turn right or left, I turned left, and so I kept driving and Eventually I had driven the car for a long distance on a forest road where the ruts gradually became so deep that I felt as if the car was stuck. I kept driving until the car stopped completely. I tried to reverse but I mightn’t, so I stopped the car and turned off the engine.”
But it’s cold and dark and the man doesn’t know which way to turn, or whether he’ll be able to reach someone else on foot. In the end, he sets out into the moonless darkness, and following a while a luminous figure comes towards him, its features expanding as the narrator struggles with… What he sees: “Pure white, the outlines of a person, a human being inside pure white, yes, maybe it is like that.” Here, Jon Fosse does not describe the mysterious being clearly, as it seems as if he wanted to remain mysterious even in his being.
While the luminous figure lingers and the narrator remains lost in the woods, the male protagonist meets his elderly parents, who turn out to be just as lost as him, and argue among themselves regarding what they are doing there.
Here, John Fosse succeeds in finding a balance of events, as the narrator remains rooted in logic even when the events unfold like a dream, as if he wants to say: “Maybe there is something that has only been experienced, but it does not actually happen. But is it possible to experience something only and not have it happen?”
It is noteworthy that Jon Fosse is a Norwegian novelist and playwright who reached the pinnacle of his glory by recently winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in its latest edition, placing his name among the most prominent Norwegian writers in history.
