The necessary revival of the national mineral processing industry highlighted

BEJAIA – Participants in a study day on mining resources organized on Saturday in Béjaïa called for the revival of the national mineral processing industry and the redeployment of Algerian mining companies in order to ensure global integration into the mining sector.

These recommendations were formulated at the end of the work of this Day organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, on the theme “The scarcity of mineral resources and positioning of Algeria, role of the Tala Hamza-Amizour zinc-lead deposit”.

The participants, including academics, researchers and senior executives from the mining sector, insisted on the imperative of encouraging the national mineral processing industry by relying on the mining sector through investment facilitation, in order to to maximize added value and create jobs.

They also underlined the importance of the redeployment of national mining companies in order to ensure global integration into the mining value chain for the national economy, believing that this sector might play an important economic role regionally, nationally and internationally.

It was also recommended the creation of a national mineral processing center to accelerate the implementation of public authorities’ decisions, in particular those relating to the compensation of citizens affected by the Tala Hamza-Oued Amizour mine project. .

Other recommendations in terms of social responsibility and strengthened collaboration between the university and the company, were made in order to ensure a qualified human resource and contribute to the reduction of unemployment, through training and implementation of a professional integration system for graduating and post-graduation students.

The participants also called for the mobilization of associations in the process of environmental protection, as well as the opening of offices to listen and record citizens’ requests.

It was also recommended the strict application of health, safety and environmental protection instructions, described in the official project documents with the installation of a local environmental monitoring committee chaired by the wali of Béjaïa where representatives are represented all stakeholders to ensure monthly monitoring of the project in all its aspects.

Note that the Study Day was held in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun and the Minister of the Environment and of Renewable Energies, Fazia Dahleb and officials from the Higher Education sector.

This study day, organized at the Aboudaou campus of Abderrahmane Mira University, was marked by a rich debate and interventions from civil society, local elected officials and representatives of the local authorities of the wilaya.
