A lunar freezer… This makes you smile, and yet the astronauts on the Artemis missions will need it to store certain samples taken from the Moon. The objective of these missions is to be able to find a possibility of living on this star. In 2025, Artemis 3 must launch. The Artemis 4 and 5 missions will follow one another and from 2029 the ambition is to be able to ensure the survival of astronauts in space for long periods.
Please note, the lunar freezer, for which a call for tenders has just been launched, should not, initially at least, allow food to be preserved. Its only use will be the storage of lunar samples which will have to be analyzed to better understand the environment in which these researchers find themselves.
The freezer will have to have many qualities to be able to fly aboard one of the next missions. It will have to be particularly mobile since the intention is to be able to move it easily, to settle in different lunar habitats. The dimensions are strict. 25 centimeters deep, 25 centimeters wide and 66 centimeters high. The maximum weight must not exceed 55 kilos. As for the temperature, it will need to be able to drop below 85 degrees for 30 days.
But that’s not all. It will include a wireless Internet connection and a battery of sensors to record everything. If you have an old freezer in the back of your kitchen that you think you might tinker with to make it meet these criteria, you have until 2027 to come forward. Takeoff is scheduled for 2029, with the Artemis 5 mission.
