A leatherback turtle washed up on the beach of Knokke-Heist on Saturday morning, confirmed Jan Haelters of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. This is only the third time that an individual of this species has washed up on the Belgian coast in 30 years.

It is probably a female, measuring 1.73 meters and weighing 200 kilos. She was found not far from the Dutch border and is believed to have been dead for several days. His remains will be taken to Merelbeke for autopsy. Leatherback turtles normally live in the Atlantic Ocean but are sometimes noticed closer to shore during warmer months.
