A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook southern Mexico on Friday night and set off alarms as far away as Mexico City, but no personal or property damage was immediately reported.
The United States Geological Survey indicated that the earthquake occurred shortly following 11:00 p.m. near the town of Matías Romero, in the southern state of Oaxaca, at a depth of 108 kilometers (67 miles).
Oaxaca state Civil Protection said it was awaiting reports of damage.
Strong shaking was felt in the capital of Oaxaca.
The tremor activated seismic alarms in Mexico City, prompting residents to take to the streets, but it was not felt in most areas.
