According to data submitted by the National Tax Service to the office of Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Su-jin on the 7th, the per-capita business income of 99 singers in the top 1% of income in 2021 was calculated to be 3.8 billion won. The per capita business income of the remaining 99% (9,761 people) was only 11 million won.

The income of the top 1% of singers accounted for nearly 76.9% of the total. This is a rapid increase following 60.1% in 2019 and 70.6% in 2020.

It has been confirmed that the income gap between athletes and YouTubers is increasing day by day. The average annual business income per person of the 375 athletes in the top 1% was 4.96 billion won, but the per capita income of the remaining 99% (37,143 people) was only 8 million won. The share of the top 1% of total income fell from 49.6% in 2019 to 48.2% in 2020, but appears to have increased once more to 49.6% in 2021. The average business income per person of the 342 YouTubers in the top 1% was 366 million won. On the other hand, the average business income of the remaining 99% (33,877 people) was only 6 million won. The income share of the top 1% is rising to 28.8% in 2019, 36.4% in 2020, and 37.6% in 2021.

Rep. Lee Soo-jin explained, “Only when income inequality is resolved will Korean Wave stars, sports players, and YouTubers be able to work in a healthy environment.”
