Technical Problems Temporarily Halt Spanish Nationality Applications in Havana: Updates on the Democratic Memory Law (LMD)

2023-10-06 19:32:22

The Spanish Consulate in Havana has announced a suspension in the assignment of credentials for those seeking to obtain Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory Law (LMD).

As has been announced in the last few hours, this suspension is temporary, and is due to technological irregularities in the platform used to carry out the assignment of credentials. So far there has been no talk of an estimated date for the resumption of the process, which is essential to obtain an appointment.

In the same way, an official statement from the Consulate explains that technological problems in the infrastructure of the consular headquarters have forced the implementation of certain modifications in the daily activity of that headquarters.

For example, Civil Registry services have been moved to the Lonja del Comercio, while passport-related matters are now handled at the Velasco Palace. These changes have raised concerns and caused delays in procedures.

The news of the suspension has provoked various reactions on social networks, where some citizens have speculated regarding the possible reasons behind this situation. Many fear that the Spanish consulate in Havana is buying time to see the outcome of the elections in Spain, since there is the possibility of a second electoral round if the Socialist Party fails to form a government. And as we know, if the Popular Party takes office, they have promised to immediately repeal the law also known as the Grandchildren Law.

Two years of validity

But even if the PSOE were to remain in power, the LMD is valid for two years, and almost a year has passed since its entry into force. Thousands of Cubans of Spanish descent meet the necessary requirements to apply for nationality, but are hampered by the lack of appointments and endless obstacles within or within the country.

No wonder the community of Cubans interested in obtaining Spanish nationality through this law hopes for a prompt solution to the technical problems that have interrupted the process, with the hope that the procedures will be resumed in the near future.

The LMD, popularly known as the Nietos Law, was designed to be more flexible and allow a greater number of descendants of Spaniards to opt for Spanish nationality. To date, the Spanish Consulate in Havana has not provided information on how many Cubans have received a positive resolution in their cases.
