LOSAIL, Qatar – After going fastest in the first free practice session earlier in the day, Max Verstappen clinched the pole position for the Forumle 1 Grand Prix of Qatar on Friday.

Verstappen might clinch a third drivers’ championship in a row this weekend. Verstappen can clinch the title with at least a sixth place in the sprint race on Saturday. This race will have its own qualifying, earlier on Saturday.

George Russell will start alongside Verstappen on the front row, while Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton took third and fourth place respectively.

Lance Stroll had some problems and he will have to settle for 17th position on the starting grid on Sunday.

Earlier Friday during free practice, the Red Bull team driver beat Carlos Sainz Jr. by 334 thousandths of a second and he was faster than the other Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, by 481 thousandths.

Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez is the only driver who can mathematically wrest the drivers’ championship from the Dutchman. Perez showed the fifth best time of the essias, 588 thousandths behind Verstappen.

The dust and sand present on the circuit made it difficult to find grip.

“My God, it’s so slippery,” Verstappen suggested to his team on the radio.
