As we have already reported, the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max They have the ability to record videos to external sources thanks to support for USB 3 on the USB-C port, whose transfer rates can reach 10Gbps.
Considering the existing universe of USB-C accessories, however, not all options are compatible with the aforementioned transfer rate, limiting some features. Despite this, Apple does not seem to care whether or not the user is using a cable that will allow them to transfer content in the best possible quality, as iOS does not display any alert indicating this in the Camera app.
Some people discovered this in the least pleasant way: by trying to record a 4K video at 60 frames per second in ProRes and seeing that, in the end, the recording had a frame rate much lower than expected. This was the case with video artist Becca Farsace, as released by The Verge:
She attempted to record 4K/60fps ProRes video, recording directly to an external SSD via USB, but inadvertently did so using a USB-C cable that does not support USB 3 data transfer speeds, so the footage was captured at a higher frame rate. terribly low. The first problem is that USB-C cables are a mess when it comes to data transfer and high-speed charging capabilities. The second problem: the Camera app did not warn or indicate that the connection to the SSD was not fast enough.
As pointed out by developer Steve Mosermost intriguingly, the Camera app shows an error message if an SSDSolid-state driveor solid state drive.”>1 external connected to an iPhone 15 Pro [Max] does not support high recording speeds — but the same does not happen with cables.
The iOS 17 Camera app does have an error message if an external SSD connected to an iPhone 15 Pro is too slow to record to but it looks like it doesn’t have a message if the USB-C cable is too slow. https://t.co/fcR5HUl7Ab

To say that Apple did not warn, there is even an indication in a supporting documentthat external recording in ProRes is only possible from a USB-C cable compatible with USB 3 — however, let’s face it, no one will check this on their own before using the functionality.
Therefore, this can be quite a problem — especially for professionals in the field —, so the warning is valid. We’ll see if Apple improves this with a software update in the future…
