Five schools were closed in France due to the presence of bedbugs, according to a report drawn up by the Ministry of Education on Friday October 6. These are located in Marseille, Pontet (Vaucluse), Louhans (Saône-et-Loire), Villefranche-sur-Saône (Rhône) and Saint-Dié (Vosges), specified the ministry in a communication sent to Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding that “a few situations linked to bedbugs without having resulted in complete closure of structures have been reported.”
This is the case at the Elisa-Lemonnier high school in Paris, where the presence of bedbugs led to Thursday « a movement of teachers who asserted their right of withdrawal, inadmissible according to the academy insofar as the restricted areas did not prevent all courses from being held”announced the ministry.
Thursday morning, “students and teachers remained outside, on the sidewalk. The teachers asserted their right to withdraw. None of the 80 teachers who were supposed to teach classes this Thursday and the students went home”, a high school teacher explained to AFP. The latter reopened Friday morning, certain teachers having agreed to give lessons, according to France Bleu.
The Germaine-Tillion high school in Montbéliard (Doubs) is also affected, as is the Tremplin Nature boarding school in Guéret (Creuse), where bedbugs were detected “in the boarding school which has welcomed students from Marouzeau college in Guéret since the start of the school year”. Of the “solutions were found internally to ensure accommodation for the 32 students concerned”specified the ministry.
Bedbugs were also discovered in the boarding school of La Ferté-Bernard high school (Sarthe), leading to “closing of a dormitory”with 20 students “relocated to another dormitory”as well as in the boarding school of the Lorient high school (Morbihan), where “four boarding rooms” were closed “three days in September”and in boarding schools in Strasbourg, where “eight rooms” have been “processed and closed”.
Friday morning, an interministerial meeting on bedbugs took place in Matignon. This was intended to set « decisions and directions » et “respond to the legitimate anxiety of the French”, according to Olivier Véran, the government spokesperson.
