Dozens of female students in an African country were afflicted with a disease described as mysterious, which required them to be taken to the hospital, according to news reports, but experts questioned the matter and considered it merely a misleading attempt on the part of the girls to avoid exams at the end of the year.

The British newspaper “Daily Mail” reported that the incident occurred at St. Teresa Irigi Girls’ Secondary School in the town of Musoli, 374 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

She said that 95 female nurse students were taken to the hospital following they became paralyzed as a result of the mysterious disease that spread in the school.

Health officials in this East African country have opened an investigation to uncover the causes of the outbreak of the strange disease, warning of catastrophic repercussions if the disease is contagious.

According to local media, the girls suddenly fell to the ground at school.

Video footage attributed to what happened in the hospital circulated, and the British newspaper The Daily Mail described it as “worrying footage,” showing the two students struggling to stand on their feet, receiving help from their colleagues, and shaking uncontrollably.

Doctors were confused regarding the cause of the outbreak of the disease among the female students, while blood and urine samples of these girls were sent to laboratories in search of the causes.

But experts doubted the existence of the disease in its entirety, assuming that the whole matter was nothing more than a case of “mass hysteria,” according to what the British Broadcasting Corporation “BBC” reported.

Education officials said they feared that the students had pretended to be sick to avoid the end-of-year exams weeks before they took place.

An official in the education system said that some female students may actually be sick, but the majority pretend to be so.

A senior health official stated that the tests did not reveal any pathogens.

She said that more tests would be conducted to verify what happened.
