From mobilization to mobilization, criticism continues to grow on a few articles hidden in the vast bill aimed at “make justice more humane, faster and firmer“, certainly supported by the Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) but validated by all components of the federal government.
Critics from the start
If within the government, there was little initial concern regarding certain provisions made in this bill, several organizations quickly expressed concerns.
Last February, the Federal Institute for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights, an official body, issued an opinion in which he concluded : ” As it is a foundation of our democratic society, the freedom to demonstrate cannot be restricted lightly and can in any case only be restricted in very limited circumstances. The bill raises serious questions, particularly regarding the necessity of the proposed sentence. In view of these fundamental objections and reflections, the IFDH has no other choice than to express an unfavorable opinion on the text as it is currently formulated. “
In the process, unions (Christian, socialist and liberal), the Human Rights League or organizations like Amnesty International, Greenpeace or the CNCD sounded the alarm to the majority parties including the PS and Ecolo.
For its part, the FGTB alerted the Socialist Party, without much result.
Political unease
The bill nonetheless continued its legislative journey. Certainly, socialists and ecologists obtained some adjustments before the vote in the Justice Committee. Insufficient, for its increasingly numerous detractors. Too late for PS and Ecolo, held by federal loyalty and especially the favorable opinion expressed both within the Council of Ministers and in the Chamber.
The FGTB mounted the barricades once morest the left of the federal coalition and the PTB might only fan the embers.
“To know if it’s a regression of 10 meters or 100 metersodon’t care, it’s a regression“, says the president of the FGTB, Thierry Bodson.Environmentalists and socialists cannot vote for a law that is a regression“, he continues.
The pressure is now maximum, particularly on the Socialist Party, which is being mistreated in the polls. Here the PS is reduced to choosing between the support of the FGTB and the support that the party gives to a liberally worded project.
The governmental left is currently hiding behind an opinion to be issued by the Council of State; but soon all this will be swept away by the threatening storm.
