ABU DHABI – First-time workers in the UAE will have a four-month grace period to enroll in unemployment insurance. Officials said all employees in the private sector and the federal government must join the scheme.

Legal Adviser Mohammad Najib said employees of free zones, semi-government and local self-government bodies have the opportunity to register. According to Ministerial Resolution No. 604 of 2022, employees who have started work will have a grace period of four months to register with the UAE unemployment insurance system. People who work following January 1, 2023 must register within four months of entering the UAE. This grace period also applies to new employees who started work following the October 1 registration deadline, said Mohammad Najib.

According to the law, those who do not register with the scheme following four months will be fined Dh400. Each employee is responsible for registration. But the HRD ministry said employers have an option to register their employees in the system. The insurance system provides compensation to employees for three months to enable those who have lost their jobs to live a dignified life while they look for new jobs. It will help people in difficult financial times. The ministry said that more than 65 lakh employees have registered for the unemployment insurance scheme. For registration: www.iloe.ae.
