At least 40 dead after flash flood from glacial lake in India

At least 40 people have died in flash floods in the Indian Himalayas caused by a glacial lake overflowing its banks. Government officials announced this on Friday. Rescue workers continued to search for dozens of missing people. Sudden flooding from glacial lakes has increased as a result of global climate change.

Lake Lhonak overflowed its banks on Wednesday and caused severe destruction in several districts of the state of Sikkim, according to local disaster management. The lake lies at the foot of a glacier near Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

Because of global warming, the ice on many glaciers is melting faster. Glacial lakes are therefore increasingly overflowing their banks. Climate researchers warn of an increasing risk of such floods across the entire Himalayan Mountains.
