During a CT scan, doctors found a three-centimeter-long needle that had been inside the brain of an elderly woman in the Russian Far East for eighty years.

Doctors believe that the woman was subjected to a failed murder attempt carried out by her parents during her childhood, and said that they would not attempt to remove the needle for fear that this would worsen her condition.

The local health department in Russia’s remote Sakhalin region said: “Such cases were common during the famine years.”

She added that her parents likely decided to get rid of their child during World War II, because she had been living with a three-centimetre needle “since she was born.”

She pointed out that this method is often used to hide evidence of a crime.

Food shortages were prevalent throughout the Soviet Union during the war, and much of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The local health department said, “The needle penetrated the left parietal lobe, but it did not have the intended effect, as the girl survived.”

She added that the patient never complained of headaches due to the injury, and was not in any danger, noting that “her condition is under the supervision of the treating physician.”
