One day following Morocco and Spain were chosen to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup as part of a tripartite bid that includes Portugal, signs of division emerged between the two neighbors over hosting the final match of the tournament, according to Archyde.com news agency.
In statements to the Onda Cerro radio station on Thursday, Spain’s Acting Minister of Sports, Mikel Eceta, expected that the final would be held in his country.
But Fawzi Lakjaa, President of the Moroccan Federation, said that the goal is to hold the final in Casablanca.
In an interview with Radio Mars, Lakjaa hoped that Morocco would “culminate” its efforts by celebrating “a historic final in Casablanca Stadium.”
Argentina also intervened, with government officials and the national football federation expressing a desire to host “more than one match” in the finals.
Lakjaa explained that representatives of Morocco, Spain and Portugal will meet on October 18 in Rabat to discuss preparations for the tournament.
Six Moroccan cities will host World Cup matches.
Ethita pointed out that the Spanish Federation has cooperated with Morocco and Portugal in the long term and that they have reached an advanced agreement on how to divide the matches.
FIFA announced on Wednesday that the 2030 edition will be held in Morocco, Spain and Portugal, while the first three matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the competition.
