ECOWAS President Collaborates with European and African Leaders for Sub-Regional Development and Security

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, HE Dr Omar Alieu Touray, received, on Tuesday October 3, 2023, three delegations aimed at fostering collaboration and strengthening partnerships to respond to the key issues facing the sub-region. Ms. Helena König, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, HE Samaila Zubairu, Chief Executive Officer of Africa Finance Corporation, and Dr. Jasper Wieck, Political Director of the German Ministry of Defense, led these delegations.

While thanking the delegates for their visit, President Touray pledged to collaborate with them to resolve the security and development problems of the sub-region. He stressed the need to collaborate with the activities of different partners to ensure that they deliver the results required for the peace, development and prosperity of West Africa.

Previously, the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Ms. Helena König, discussed cooperation between the EU and ECOWAS, including issues related to transitions, the situation in Niger and the Economic Partnership Agreement ( APE). They also announced that the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, will visit ECOWAS on the 20th of this month.

Meanwhile, HE Samaila Zubairu, Chief Executive Officer of Africa Finance Corporation, a multilateral financial organization focused on tackling Africa’s infrastructure deficit and its challenging operating environment, said it was an opportunity to introduce financial cooperation into the management of ECOWAS and to explore avenues of collaboration.

Additionally, Dr. Jasper Wieck, Political Director of the German Ministry of Defense, highlighted Germany’s commitment to regional peace and stability and brought German expertise in security and cooperation military to the mediation efforts of the Republic of Niger within ECOWAS.

The meetings took place in the presence of Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mr. Jérôme BOA, Director of External Relations, and Mr. Abdou Kolley, Head of office of the president.
