The Museum of Modern Art in Paris unfolds the life and work of Nicolas de Staël (1913-1955) through a masterful exhibition which brings together two hundred works by the artist.
Nicolas de Staël, in his large formats or his small canvases, ensures such a balance between abstraction and figuration, colors and lights, that any exhibition of his work can only be successful. This is the case of the retrospective of Museum of Modern Art of Paris (until January 21, 2024), whose works have been carefully chosen by Charlotte Barat-Mabille and Pierre Wat. This choice shows a very clean, well-polished Nicolas de Staël, minimalist but without excess.
A retrospective of choice
We move on a perfect and chronological journey from his abstract canvases, high in material, to his colorful landscapes and still lifes, very evocative of reality. Three highlights for this retrospective: the presence of numerous drawings who explain Staël’s technique; small formats skies and seaside and landscapes of Sicily, a real treat! And the ultimate work which had been neglected at Beaubourg during the 2003 retrospective.
However, some large formats from 1950 are missing, notably a Parc des Princes with its football players, proving that Staël is great but not always equal. The Nicolas de Staël retrospective takes place at the Musée d’art Moderne in Paris until January 21.
