Forza Motorsport is officially released in a few days and should provide Xbox players with a quality experience. If you want to know how the title runs on consoles, Digital Foundry has delivered its technical analysis of the Xbox Series X|S versions in a very complete video, and here are the main elements to remember.
A visual gap compared to Forza Motorsport 7
Six years following the release of Forza Motorsport 7, this new opus directly displays a significant visual gap with its predecessor. What is first striking when comparing the two games is above all the vegetation and in particular the trees, which are now much more detailed.
This is obvious on the Mapple Valley track, notably thanks to the work done on the light and shadows which now illuminate the scene more realistically, and interact more coherently with the different “materials” thanks to ambient occlusion by ray tracing.
The circuits also benefit from various improvements, notably in terms of the crowd which is now made up of 3D models. Digital Foundry also points out that its density is generally reduced compared to the previous opus, potentially to improve performance.
The expert also highlights fairly disappointing texture filtering on consoles, with “smeared” details on the track surface and barriers.
The cars benefit from great improvements, particularly in terms of the different materials, which here also react much more faithfully to light.
Ray tracing is here
With this new Forza, Turn 10 confirmed very early on that the game would offer ray tracing on consoles, even during races. In practice, the title uses various techniques to manage reflections on cars, the track or even mirrors.
During races, ray tracing is mainly used on bodywork to reflect the vehicle and opposing cars, as well as on certain trackside surfaces. Ambient occlusion by ray tracing is also included for light management. More pronounced effects are also offered during cutscenes as well as in the menus.
Digital Foundry points out, on the other hand, that certain effects presented by Turn 10 in previews from January 2023, such as reflections via ray tracing of the environment on the bodies, are absent from the final game, even on PC.
If the different techniques used by the studio generally offer satisfactory results, the experts explain that given the previews and trailers used during the promotion of the game, expectations were a little higher, and that it seems that the studio would have was able to go even further on the use of ray tracing.
Three graphics modes on Xbox Series
When it comes to tech, Forza Motorsport offers three graphics modes on Xbox Series X, which are Quality, Performance, and Performance RT modes.
Quality mode offers the best image quality, with dynamic 4K resolution and ray tracing, but at 30 FPS.
Performance RT mode targets 60 FPS, with ray tracing, and dynamic resolution at 1584p. Experts point out that the ray tracing effects in this mode are similar to those in Quality mode, with the exception of some reflections present at the edge of the track.
Performance mode offers 60 FPS in dynamic 4K, but without ray tracing, whether for reflections or ambient occlusion. This mode also does not offer reflections of other cars in the bodywork.
No ray tracing on Xbox Series S
Unsurprisingly, the Xbox Series S does not offer ray tracing during races, and you will only be able to choose between two graphics modes. Quality mode allows you to enjoy a 1440p image at 30 FPS, while Performance mode offers a 1080p image at 60 FPS.
Compared to the Xbox Series
Fortunately, the game offers a stable framerate at 30 FPS and 60 FPS depending on the graphics modes, on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, an essential point for a racing game. Below you will find the full analysis from Digital Foundry with all the details regarding the graphics part of the game.
Remember that Forza Motorsport will be playable on October 10 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and that it will be released directly on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. If you want to play the game today, you can do so by purchasing the Premium upgrade.
