The effects of immigration on filmmaking at the Film Criticism Forum

Under the slogan of migration, travel and transition in cinema, today, Thursday, the Film Commission is organizing the fifth and final round of the Film Criticism Forum in its first edition, which will be hosted by the city of Buraidah, in the presence of a number of prominent cinematic and cultural names from the Gulf and the Arab world, to provide fans of the Seventh Art with an exceptional opportunity to meet experts, critics and directors. Enhancing their dialogic and analytical skills related to watching and criticizing films.

Providing rich knowledge material

The CEO of the Film Commission, Engineer Abdullah Al-Ayyaf, confirmed that the forum’s activities, including cinematic presentations and workshops, aim to develop tools for reading Saudi, Arab and international cinema among the public, and provide rich knowledge material for cinema enthusiasts and scholars through the intellectual and cognitive communication opportunities provided by the forum.

The audience of the forum is waiting for various activities starting from 2:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., including the screening of an icon of Arab cinema, the film “Arak Al-Balah.”

Directed by the late Radwan Al-Kashef, its story revolves around the countryside that its men abandoned in order to work in the cities.

The Saudi writer and researcher, Abdullah Al-Zaid, and the Saudi director and screenwriter, Diaa Youssef, will discuss this film in the dialogue session that will be held at the end of the forum.

Workshops and discussion presentations

The forum’s activities will also witness the holding of a workshop entitled Film Synthesis presented by the Lebanese director Rania Stephan, and a presentation on cinema and immigration and their meanings in international and local cinema by the well-known film critic Ibrahim Al-Aris. As for the doctor and researcher specializing in criticism and Moroccan documentary filmmaker Habib Nasseri, he will give a presentation discussing the artistic and aesthetic features. In immigrant cinema, while the Egyptian poet and writer Youssef Rakha will review the achievements presented by Arab cinema that focused on immigrant issues, such as those films directed by the famous director Youssef Chahine.

It is noteworthy that the Film Commission had launched the first rounds of the Film Criticism Forum in Jeddah last March, which was followed by three other rounds in Dhahran, Abha, and Tabuk, respectively. The Buraidah Forum is the conclusion of the forum’s rounds that precede the International Film Criticism Conference, which will be held in Riyadh next November as a major demonstration targeting all segments of local and international society.
