In a preseason game between the two Alberta teams, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid combined their efforts to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 7-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday in a preseason game of the NHL.
Posted near the boards first, the German spotted his faithful sidekick at the mouth of the net, and served him a masterful backhand lift pass.
Not stopping his run, McDavid rounded Dan Vladar’s net before easily scoring using the turnstile.
Edmonton’s No. 97 finished his game with four points (1-3), while Draisaitl also scored later in the game.
Newcomer Connor Brown, who appears poised to be used alongside McDavid at even strength, scored two goals for the Oilers, in addition to providing an assist.
Lane Pederson and Quebecer Raphaël Lavoie completed the scoring for the Oilers, while Nikita Zadorov and Walker Duehr responded for the Flames.
Benson and Fantilli are distinguished
Zach Benson had his fifth point in as many games in his first NHL preseason schedule, as the Buffalo Sabers were defeated 5-3 by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Benson, 18 years old and the 13th overall pick in the last draft, allowed the Sabers to tie the score 3-3 late in the second period when he fired a good wrist shot that surprised goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, on the side of the stick.
The Western Junior League forward gives new reasons to Buffalo’s staff not to immediately send him back to the Wenatchee Wild.
The last word, however, went to Adam Fantilli, third choice in the auction in June, while the latter scored the eventual victorious goal, halfway through the last third.
Fantilli’s one-timer from the blue line deflected off an opponent’s body before finding its way past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
It was the first goal of the preseason season scored by the University of Michigan Wolverines product.
Patrik Laine, Johnny Gaudreau, Emil Bemstrom and Kirill Marchenko also scored for the Jackets, who challenged Luukkonen 31 times.
Besides Benson, the Sabers’ scorers were Zemgus Girgensons and Owen Power.
The Devils still in great shape
At the Prudential Center in Newark, the New Jersey Devils signed their sixth victory in as many outings in the preparatory calendar, dominating the New York Rangers 5 to 2.
Jack Hughes, Dawson Mercer and Nico Hischier each had a goal and an assist, while Ondrej Palat provided three assists.
Paired once more with Jesper Bratt and Tyler Toffoli, Hughes scored a superb goal during a massive attack late in the second period.
His younger brother Luke Hughes also beat Jonathan Quick, who played the entire match.
Author of a hat trick at the start of the week once morest the New York Islanders, Bratt opened the scoring at 17:12 of the first period.
Will Cuylle and Adam Fox were the scorers for the Rangers, who shot Vitek Vanecek 21 times.
We will see New Jersey one last time before the regular season kicks off on Friday at the home of the Islanders.
