For its tenth edition, the Saint-Jean de Luz festival presents a great program of feature films, invites future greats of cinema and multiplies the events on the Basque coast.
At the beginning of October, the Saint-Jean de Luz Festival takes the pulse of the 7th art by showing the works of young directors from around the world (with a selection of first and second feature films), something like the future of movie theater. This year, will be presented in competition The Lights of Adenwonderful story of abortion in Yemen, the Turkish film Yurt, Fantastic Three with Raphael Quenard, Return to Alexandria with Fanny Ardant or even Leave the night of Delphine Girard… Signed by Patrick Fabre, the programming is daring, the teams come to meet the spectators and the festival is open to an enthusiastic public who come in large numbers, in the dream setting of the Basque coast, under a radiant sun.
Chaired by Agnès Jaoui, the tenth edition of the Saint-Jean de Luz Festival began with a moving concert by Alex Beaupain, author, composer and performer, traveling companion of Christophe Honoré, who wrote for Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant and Romain Duris. A beautiful concert where he played his hits on the piano, accompanied by a cellist. Before the opening film, The Kings of the trackwith its solid gold cast (Fanny Ardant, Mathieu Kassovitz, Lætitia Dosch, Nicolas Duvauchelle…), champagne bubble created by Thierry Klifa to whom we asked a few little questions.
« The initial idea was to make a film regarding family, regarding a group of broken people. Originally, there was also a meeting with a home cook, who despite a respectable appearance, was an inveterate gambler. I really liked the idea of princes without a kingdom, these people who paint life in gold, who always believe that they will remake themselves and finally win the prize. After the Covid epidemic, a very dark period for me, I wanted lightness, comedy, to move towards something happy and for people to feel good with my characters, as we recognize ourselves in those by Philippe Rappeneau. The Kings of the track shines through my love of cinema – which is the great story of my life – and this immense pleasure in making films, which I wanted to transmit with my actors.
Working with Stradivarius is great. We drew the family characters well at the time of writing, but I found Céleste, the character played by Lætitia Dosch, weaker than the others. Everything changed when she came into the film. She inspired me during filming, she kept asking me questions. With my screenwriter, we rewrote scenes and dialogues, and she created the balance between the detective intrigue and the family intrigue. She manages to convey dialogues that no other actress would have succeeded in conveying. With her, I allowed myself sequences that don’t advance the action, when she tells her anecdotes regarding her sister, but they are the breaths that give the film its identity. It’s a big lesson that I learned from André Téchiné, you don’t have to be efficient all the time, you have to give the film breathing space, derail the train…
The Kings of the track is perhaps my most personal film and I had a little difficulty liking it, because it was like looking in a mirror. The film reflects my state of mind; I am outwardly very joyful, but with a real melancholy background. With my films, we often talked regarding my beautiful castings and that suited me. This time, we will perhaps talk a little more regarding me… I am in all my characters, especially that of Mathieu Kassovitz. I’m not a crook, a broken arm, perhaps, but what is certain is that I am always closer to the losers than to the winners. »
