Rapper MHD, sentenced to 12 years in prison at the end of September for his alleged involvement in the murder of a young man in 2018 during a settling of scores between rival gangs, appealed his conviction, according to Me Antoine Vey, a of his lawyers, confirming information from Le Figaro. Me Vey did not wish to make further comments on this matter.
The artist, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, was sentenced on September 24 by the Paris Assize Court. Five of his co-defendants were also sentenced to sentences ranging from 10 to 18 years in prison. Four of them also appealed, while the fifth is on the run and was tried in absentia, according to a source close to the case. Three other men who were tried alongside MHD were acquitted by the court. The case dates back to the night of July 5 to 6, 2018, when Loïc K., a 23-year-old young man, was deliberately knocked down by a Mercedes in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, then violently attacked by around ten men and stabbed. He died of his injuries shortly following his attackers left. The car was found burned in a parking lot the next day.

At the heart of this affair is a settling of scores between young people from the city of Chaufourniers, nicknamed the red city, where the accused come from, and the neighboring city of Grange aux Belles, located in the 10th and 19th arrondissements of Paris. The rapper was incriminated by several witnesses claiming that he was present at the crime scene, although he always denied his involvement. This case had a significant impact on the career of the artist, who is a pioneer of “afro-trap”, a mixture of hip-hop and African music. He became known in 2015 thanks to a viral video posted on YouTube, which marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in the music world.
