A commitment to the environment
Air France-KLM, committed to the transition to more environmentally friendly aviation, has just announced an order for 50 Airbus A350s, with an option for 40 additional aircraft. Benjamin Smith, the group’s general manager, makes these planes a key asset of AirFrance-KLM’s climate strategy: “The A350 will play a key role in achieving our ambitious decarbonization targets, including achieving -30% CO2 emissions per passenger/kilometer by 2030”, compared to 2019, he indicates. The A350-900 and A350-1000, capable of reducing fuel consumption by 25% compared to previous generations, will thus contribute to the fight once morest climate change.
Fleet modernization
This historic order, representing an investment estimated at more than $16 billion, is a continuation of previous Air France-KLM initiatives. It mainly aims to replace the older generation Boeing 777-200s and Airbus A330s (33 aircraft in total) in the years to come. This operational efficiency of the A350s, combined with their significant reduction in noise footprint (40% less than their predecessors), will allow the group to rationalize its fleet while offering an improved passenger experience.
The A350, a favorite of passengers and crew
The Airbus A350 has quickly become the favorite aircraft of passengers and crews since it entered service in 2019. Benjamin Smith recalls that “This state-of-the-art aircraft is quieter, more fuel efficient and more cost-effective than previous generation aircraft”. This major order confirms that Air France-KLM is fully satisfied with the A350, whose excellence contributes to strengthening the competitiveness and reputation of the group on the international scene.
If this order goes according to plan, the airline will become the world’s leading Airbus A350 operator, operating 99 aircraft, including eight dedicated to cargo.
What economic and financial impacts?
The order for 50 Airbus A350s by Air France-KLM not only represents a significant step towards more sustainable aviation but also has important economic and financial implications. Certainly, the estimated cost of this purchase exceeds $16 billion, but it is important to note that such orders are rarely paid at list price, due to frequent discount negotiations in the aviation industry.
This decision should also generate positive economic benefits, particularly in terms of operational efficiency. By replacing older Boeing 777-200s and Airbus A330s, Air France-KLM will reduce maintenance costs, increase fuel efficiency and optimize passenger satisfaction, which is expected to have a positive impact on its long-term profitability.
