Apple today released an iOS 17.0.3 update for the iPhone, with the software launching a week following the release of iOS 17.0.2. Apple has also released a new version of iPadOS, 17.0.3, for iPad users.
The iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates can be downloaded to eligible iPhones and iPads over an internet connection by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
What do you need to know
iOS 17.0.3 fixes a significant overheating issue on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Overheating was reported by customers shortly following the launch of the new iPhone 15 models, with cases of shutdowns due to heat.
Apple confirmed there was a bug in late September and said it would be fixed with an iOS 17 update. Some third-party apps were also stressing the A17 Pro chip, causing heat dissipation issues. Apps that affected performance included Instagram, Uber and others. In addition to releasing an update to resolve the issue in iOS 17, Apple also worked with app developers to optimize apps that were causing problems.
Fix for overheating
According to Apple, customers who were experiencing temperature issues will see the issue resolved with the update, and the issue is not related to the titanium frame of the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the Overheating was likely caused by compromises made in the thermal system design and suggested that Apple might only solve the problem by reducing processor performance.
A17 PRO is not the problem, says Apple
Apple has stated that it does not intend to tweak the A17 Pro chip and that the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium and aluminum design actually provides better heat dissipation than previous models with stainless steel frames.
Security vulnerability fix
The iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates also fix a kernel vulnerability that might allow an attacker to gain elevated privileges. Apple says it is aware that this security flaw has been exploited in versions of iOS prior to iOS 16.6.
