Chile’s Exclusion from 2030 World Cup Hosts: FIFA’s Decision and Government Response

FIFA dealt a hard blow to Chilean football. Early this Wednesday, Alejandro Domínguez, the president of Conmebol, announced that Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay would receive the first three duels for the 2030 World Cup. The rest will be played in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Chile, one of the countries that worked together to hold the event in South America, was left out due to the order that came from Zurich.

“Originally there was talk of two countries that were Uruguay and Argentina. Then the World Cup was expanded from 32 to 48 teams and in that context Paraguay was added and then Chile was added. It is true that on this occasion Chile is not there, which does not mean that we are not going to work so that Chile is either there or we find something of this stature. It is a decision that is made by FIFA, not us. They are the ones who determine how and what. This is the moment when we have to start working at the headquarters,” explained Domínguez.

The news was not only a blow to football. Government sources commented that the announcement did not leave La Moneda indifferent either. The thing is that Chile’s candidacy to host had been firmly expressed in the Government of Gabriel Boric, as well as previously in that of Sebastián Piñera. The commitment was absolute and included authorities at all levels, who actively participated in the work tables and meetings that were held periodically.

Therefore, upon learning that Chile had been excluded as a host for the Cup, President Boric contacted his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández, with the aim of having more information regarding FIFA’s decision. The President’s idea is that he did not stop doing something, but he wanted to contrast his opinion.

And once all the information was collected, in Coquimbo, President Boric referred to the hard blow that the country received. “This is not a decision in which the Government has sinned in any type of negligence. It is FIFA’s own decision. “I talked regarding it with the presidents of Argentina and Paraguay and they found out when this decision was made public,” he stated.

Then he added that “I regret that there are institutions that operate in a non-serious and surprising manner and of course, we are going to assert all the rights that correspond to Chile, because there is no trifling with national integrity and the name of Chile.”
