On the 5th, the Daejeon District Prosecutors’ Office announced that it was conducting a search and seizure of the National Statistical Office and others in connection with a suspected case of statistical manipulation that the Board of Audit and Inspection requested an investigation into.
At 9 o’clock on this day, the prosecution sent prosecutors and investigators to the National Statistical Office, Korea Real Estate Agency, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and Ministry of Employment and Labor to secure relevant data.
The subjects of the Board of Audit and Inspection’s request for investigation included all four former government policy chiefs (Jang Ha-seong, Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Sang-jo, and Lee Ho-seung).
Former Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs Hong Jang-pyo, former Senior Secretary for Job Creation Hwang Deok-sun, former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Hyun-mi, former Statistics Korea Commissioner Kang Shin-wook, former First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Yoon Seong-won, and former Korea Real Estate Board Directors Kim Hak-gyu and Son Tae-rak are also eligible.
Former President Moon Jae-in was not included.
Previously, the Board of Audit and Inspection requested the prosecution to investigate 22 high-ranking officials of the former government, claiming that the Moon Jae-in administration had systematically manipulated major national statistics, including housing prices, following conducting an audit of the ‘preparation and use of major national statistics.’
