Innsbruck (OTS) – Unfortunately, a lack of awareness of injustice persists in the Pitztal. Regardless of the fact that a fundamental constitutional right has been undermined by the actions of public officials.
Three “election workers” were found guilty of “abuse of official authority” on Tuesday – in the first instance and not legally. But stop! All three of them went into the trial with a clear confession of their innocence. At least the first defendant continues to speculate that he will be able to appeal the verdict and punishment. Many Tyroleans, equipped with common sense and a lay understanding of the law, ask themselves: How is this possible? How can elected representatives, who are supposed to be election assessors to ensure an accurate election, suddenly become signature forgers and election fraudsters?
Seemingly quite simple, one would completely believe the words of the condemned. In their view, a referendum, unlike a referendum, is not binding, and therefore it is not a “real election” at all. The actors involved also acted strictly in the spirit of their authorized representatives and properly put a cross in the right place. Hardly any election can be influenced more clearly than the three men. Accordingly, the jury imposed a high sentence with two twelve and one eleven months probation and an unconditional fine. Because the damage to the population and to the community of St. Leonhard in the Pitztal and beyond to the understanding of democracy has already been done. The citizens in St. Leonhard i. P. might have hoped for an honest election.
The general understanding of democracy that various witnesses presented can also be seen as exciting and even adventurous. Otherwise, how can it be that a witness confesses to the judge that he “sent” his driver’s license. What happened in the course of the referendum “didn’t matter” to him. A voting card was then applied for and the voter’s signature was forged and voted on “in agreement” with the person entitled to vote. Probably a new dimension of disillusionment with politics. The “picture-perfect Democrat,” as one of the defense lawyers called him, didn’t care whether his signature was misused in this case.
Forging signatures and interfering with the constitutionally protected right to vote are not just a prank. According to the public prosecutor’s office, election fraud is “not part of day-to-day business.” It remains to be hoped that the prison sentence, which has been partially converted into a fine, will be enough of a deterrent for future potential “election tricksters”. And that the awareness of injustice spreads to the back of the Pitztal. After all, it’s regarding our core values.
