The number of unemployed people in Brussels increased by 3.4% in September. An increase that is even more noticeable among young people.
The Brussels Region has 91,088 unemployed job seekers (DEI) in September 2023, i.e. a increase of 3.4% compared to the same period in 2022 and an increase of 866 people (+1.0%) compared to the month of August 2023, the regional employment office Actiris reported this Wednesday.
The increase is particularly notable among young people under 25where the number of job seekers increased by 15.8% in one month and 9.1% in one year. The unemployment rate, currently at 15.0%, has fallen by 0.3% compared to last year (15.3%).
Actiris received a total of 83,326 job offers in September, a decrease of 5.8% compared to the previous month and 15.8% compared to September 2022.
The number of young job seekers has not been this high since October 2017, when the number was 10,541. If we focus only on the month of September, it is also the highest number since September 2016, when the region had 11,513 job seekers. This figure was last around 10,000 in September and October 2020, at 10,450 and 10,286 respectively.
The number of job offers decreasing
Furthermore, 46% of job seekers are long-term job seekers (for two years or more), notes Actiris.
The number of unemployed people receiving compensation, for its part, is down 4% on an annual basis and the number of young people on professional integration courses has increased by 531 units in one year, or 8.1%.
