(Archyde.com, New Delhi, 3rd) The Financial Times reported today that India has informed Canadian authorities that it must withdraw 41 diplomats by October 10.
Canada recently accused Indian intelligence agencies of being involved in the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June this year, causing tensions in relations between the two countries. India called Nijar a “terrorist”, refuted all accusations and took countermeasures, including suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens.
The Financial Times quoted sources as reporting that India threatened to revoke the diplomatic immunity of Canadian diplomats who stayed following October 10.
According to reports, Canada has a total of 62 diplomats stationed in India, following India asked Canada to significantly reduce its number by 41.
The foreign ministries of India and Canada did not respond to requests for comment.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar earlier said there was a “climate of violence and intimidation” once morest Indian diplomats in Canada, and that New Delhi was also frustrated by the presence of Sikh separatist groups. Central News Agency (translation)
