Bilateral talks with a focus on Ukraine, migration, South Tyrol and parliamentary cooperation
Vienna (PK) – Vienna/Rome (PK) – As part of a two-day visit to Rome, National Council President Wolfang Sobotka held numerous discussions with Italian political figures on Tuesday and Wednesday. The central topics of the meetings were Ukraine, bilateral relations – especially parliamentary cooperation -, the autonomy of South Tyrol, transit traffic and migration. Sobotka was received by President Sergio Mattarella, President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa and President of the Chamber of Deputies Lorenzo Fontana. The extensive visit program also included meetings with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and the President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Giulio Tremonti.
The excellent relations between Italy and Austria are characterized by close cooperation at a wide range of levels, explained National Council President Sobotka during the talks. Italy is Austria’s second largest economic partner. There is also good and constructive cooperation in the implementation and further development of South Tyrol’s autonomy. With regard to the revision of the Statute of Autonomy, he hopes for quick, concrete and positive results in the spirit of the Italian government declaration, emphasized Sobotka and referred to the importance of autonomy as a widely respected special model of minority protection in Europe.
The talks also discussed a joint commitment between the two countries in the Western Balkans in order to minimize conflicts and strengthen the prospect of accession. In talks with the President of the Chamber of Deputies Lorenzo Fontana, the two presidents agreed on closer cooperation between the two parliaments to strengthen exchanges and democracy building initiatives with the parliaments of the Western Balkans. The continued support for Ukraine in Italy and Austria and the importance of the country’s reconstruction were also highlighted as a common concern.
Sobotka promoted a viable solution to the burner that was acceptable to everyone…
On the transit topic, Sobotka called for understanding for the measures taken by Austria for the benefit of the environment and its neighbors, but also showed the importance of the Brenner for the Italian export economy. A viable solution that is acceptable to everyone is necessary, said Sobotka. From an Austrian perspective, rail transport needs to be made more attractive and, in return, toll prices need to be brought into line with Swiss levels.
…and emphasizes good cooperation on migration with Italy
Austria and Italy are the countries in the EU most affected by irregular migration, Sobotka explained. This requires close and trusting cooperation, both within the EU and bilaterally. Austria is in favor of effectively securing the external borders and therefore appreciates Italy’s professionalism and great commitment in this area.
Sobotka saw a need for action on the issue of disinformation and artificial intelligence. This is fundamentally affecting and changing politics and society; the development must therefore be addressed and accompanied by responsible and ethical legislation. How we deal with artificial intelligence will determine how competitive the European Union will be in the future. (End) pst/red
